Tax Relief for Victims of Hurricane Irma
Like the relief granted to Hurricane Harvey victims last month, the IRS recently announced that Hurricane Irma victims in Florida, Puerto Rico, and other affected areas will have until Jan. 31, 2018, to file certain individual and business tax returns. This includes those individuals with tax extensions running out on Oct. 16 and businesses with tax extensions running out on Sept. 15.
Tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred starting Sept. 4, 2017, will be delayed as well. This includes the deadlines for quarterly filing, which are normally Sept. 15, 2017 and Jan. 16, 2018, as well as any payments that were due during this time.
Oct. 31 is normally the deadline for quarterly payroll and excise tax returns for businesses; however, businesses affected by Irma will now have extra time to file. Calendar-year partnerships whose 2016 extensions run out on Sept. 15, 2017 and calendar-year tax-exempt organizations whose 2016 extensions run out on Nov. 15, 2017, will also have extensions. These are just two examples of relief offered to businesses affected by the hurricane. Businesses should refer to the IRS’s Disaster Relief page for other returns, payments, and tax-related actions that qualify for additional time.
The IRS is also waiving fees for copies of previous tax returns for taxpayers affected by Irma. Qualifying taxpayers should put the assigned Disaster Designation “[location, e.g. Florida], Hurricane Irma” in red ink on the top of any requests for copies or transcripts of tax returns before sending them to the IRS.
